Vitamins in Turmeric
Turmeric's health advantages are mostly due to its major active ingredient, curcumin. According to the World's Healthiest Foods book, curcumin is responsible for the yellow hue of turmeric in addition to its health advantages. Turmeric does contain a few vitamins, and eating some turmeric during the day will not only help you ingest the necessary vitamins, but will also improve your intake of the beneficial curcumin.
B Vitamins
The B vitamins are the most common in turmeric, with vitamin B6 having the highest amount. According to the USDA, one tablespoon of turmeric contains 0.122 grams of vitamin B6. According to the National Institutes of Health, vitamin B6, commonly known as pyridoxine, is required for appropriate metabolism, red blood cell creation, hemoglobin creation (which transports oxygen to tissues), and immune and nervous system function. Other B vitamins, which are found in trace levels in turmeric, perform similar activities to B6.
C Vitamins
Vitamin C, also known as citric acid, is an essential vitamin because the body cannot generate it, thus you can only receive it from meals or supplements. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, vitamin C helps in the formation of collagen, a skin and tissue building block. It also helps to generate neurotransmitters, which are necessary for brain function and mood regulation. Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, is well-known for its immune-boosting qualities. One tablespoon of turmeric has 1.8 milligrams of vitamin C.
Trace Vitamins
One tablespoon of turmeric spice contains 0.21 mg of vitamin E and 0.9 mcg of vitamin K. Vitamin E is an oxidant that protects the body from free radical damage. According to the National Institutes of Health, vitamin E helps keep a healthy immune system and metabolic processes in the body. Vitamin K is a vitamin that often goes ignored until it is required. According to the National Institutes of Health, vitamin K plays an important function in blood clotting and is being examined for its involvement in bone health.
